Curved briar pipes lie tumbled across a bare table, bowls upturned, stems crossing. Still Life. Pipes shows Pyotr Konchalovsky building a smokers tableau from the humblest props. Tobacco browns and scorched ochres dominate, one bowl glazed a deep reddish clay against a shadowed ground. The paint sits thick, laid in blocky strokes the way Cezanne taught the Jack of Diamonds circle to build form, every contour hatched and weighted. Hang it where lamplight falls low, a study or den with leather chairs and worn spines, somewhere conversation drifts slow after dinner.
