Still Life, Pink Roses

Pink roses crowd a shallow bowl, petals pushed open by Peploe with fat, loaded brushstrokes. The arrangement reads at once as fruit and flower, flesh and pigment. Still Life, Pink Roses is the Scottish Colourist method in miniature. Look at the greens: cool, almost blue where they shadow, snapped to yellow at the leaf tips. The pink is not one pink but a dozen, from chalk-white flush to deep rose, each petal a separate decision. Behind the blooms the ground stays flat and pale, a plaster wall against which the colour does its work. Nothing is outlined. Form arrives through temperature and thickness of paint alone. A dining room or sunlit kitchen suits this palette, where the flowers keep company with morning light and linen.
