Still Life. Peonies on the Table

Peonies at their heaviest, petals folding back in pink and crimson masses, fill a bowl set on a bare table. Pyotr Konchalovsky titled it plainly: Still Life. Peonies on the table. Oil laid on in slabs, impasto thick enough to catch light along each petal ridge. Glazed earthenware carries the whole weight of the blooms; loose petals and deep green leaves scatter across the table boards. Behind, the wall goes dark ochre and pushes the flowers forward. A dining room or hallway takes the deep reds well; these flowers hold their own against paneling, plain plaster, a dark sideboard.
