Blush pink blooms tower above a white rim, bunched so densely they outweigh the vessel holding them. In Still Life. Peonies in a porcelain vase, the Russian painter Pyotr Konchalovsky piles paint as thickly as nature did. The brushwork sits heavy, rose and cream petals built up in loaded strokes, crimson shadows tucked deep between the heads. Dark green leaves cut across the pale glaze, and a muted grey ground pushes every flower forward. A dining room or breakfast nook suits it best, anywhere cut flowers get admired at close range. Come winter, the abundance on view refuses to fade.
