Still Life. Peonies in a Basket

A woven basket bows under blush and ivory blooms, packed so tightly the foliage barely shows between them. Konchalovsky gave it the plain title Still Life. Peonies in a Basket, then painted past all restraint. Thick impasto turns each petal, the loaded brush dragging rose into near white at every rim. Ochre wicker shows through the weave, its shadow pooling on the bare tabletop. Leaves cut bottle green against a quiet olive ground, and pollen freckles the open centers. A sunroom or dining room in morning light suits it best, somewhere fresh flowers land on the table and the pink reads warm against plain plaster walls.
