Still Life. Peonies and delphinium

Delphinium spires push up through a heap of peonies in the still life Peonies and delphinium, where Pyotr Konchalovsky stages two flower temperaments in a single vase of high summer. Oil paint sits in thick ridges across the surface: peony petals in rose and coral slump under their own weight, while the tall stems keep their column of ultramarine upright. Leaves are slashed in with a loaded brush, dark green against a pale ground. Hang it in a dining room or entryway where daylight shifts; the blues cool, the pinks warm, and the bouquet seems repainted by the hour.
