Still Life. Parma violets

Parma violets bunch tightly in a squat glass vase, petals shading from inky purple to pale lilac. Pyotr Konchalovsky sets the bouquet at the table edge, close enough to smell. Loaded brushstrokes stack the oil color thick, each blossom built from a few dabs of mauve and near black at the heart. Leaves cut diagonally across the stems in flat bottle green. Behind everything the ground stays quiet, a warm grey that pushes the purple forward. It belongs beside a vanity or on a bedside table in a dim bedroom, where the scent association does half the decorating before anyone looks twice.
