Still Life. Pantry

Shelves groan under loaves, hanging game and glazed stoneware in Still Life. Pantry, where Pyotr Konchalovsky turns a humble storeroom into a monument of Russian abundance. Thick impasto in ochre, russet and moss green stacks the forms: a cracked rye loaf, tin plates, a squat jug with drip glaze, game birds hooked by pale feet, cabbage leaves curling at the shelf edge. Deep shadow behind the provisions pushes every object forward. Set in a kitchen or dining room, near a farmhouse table and low morning light, such a crowded larder scene rewards long looking over breakfast.
