Still Life. Oranges

Oranges pile up against the dark in Still Life. Oranges, where the Russian painter Pyotr Konchalovsky stacks fruit like masonry, every sphere built stroke by stroke, heavy, ready to roll. The paint sits thick. Ochre warms beneath the orange of each rind, one dab of cobalt marks the shadow side, and the highlights sit on top like dollops of cream. A pewter plate, dulled to grey, holds the pile; a green cloth falls behind in deep folds. Set in a kitchen, a dining room, or a breakfast nook, it does what the best food pictures have always done: it makes the whole room feel edible.
