Still Life of Roses and a Bowl of Apples on a Green Tablecloth

Roses and apples hold the table. A shallow bowl of fruit sits at the centre of a green cloth, flanked by soft pink blooms, all laid down in Samuel Peploe thick, deliberate brushwork. The colourist economy of the arrangement is the point: nothing is fussy, everything is placed. Petals are built from loaded dabs of rose and white, edges left slightly raw against the cloth. The apples turn from red into orange where the light catches them, each one a single sculpted stroke. Underneath, the tablecloth is not flat green but a weave of viridian, emerald and dark sap tones, folded once across the foreground. A dining room or kitchen with pale walls and simple timber furniture gives these colours room to breathe. It reads best where morning light can reach it.
