Still Life of Flowers

Zinnias and daisies press against each other in a squat vase, painted here by Arthur Segal in his modernist still life of flowers. Every petal is built from flat planes of color, the stems hidden behind a wall of bloom. The palette runs through vermilion, butter yellow, and a deep leaf green, laid on in visible, confident strokes. The vase sits at the center like a hinge, its shadow thrown sideways across the table. Background color breaks into geometric facets, a nod to the avant garde circles Segal worked among. Suits a breakfast room or a small city study where color carries the weight.
