A loaf of dark bread sits beside a stoneware jug on a linen-draped table. Nikolay Bogdanov-Belsky paints his still life with the honesty of a kitchen seen at midday, when the morning chores are done and the light falls plainly across the table. The bread crust carries burnt umber highlights where the crust cracked in the oven. The jug glazes from slate blue into grey at its shoulder, one dull gleam caught on the rim.
