Still Life. Malwa

Pink mallow blossoms crowd a glazed earthenware jug in Still Life. Malwa, where Pyotr Konchalovsky gives a simple bunch of garden cuttings real sculptural weight. Rose and coral petals are built in thick loaded strokes, each bloom tilted at its own angle. Serrated green leaves break up the pinks, and the table holds a warm ochre ground with one crooked shadow. Brushwork stays weighty through the stems, looser where the petals open.
