Lilac panicles by the armful, blooms so heavy they tumble past the basket rim. Pyotr Konchalovsky titled it Still Life. Lilacs, a plain name for such abundance. Violet and deep purple clusters alternate with near white florets, each one a dab of loaded brush. Oil sits thick on the surface, ridges of paint catching light the way real petals do, while bladed green leaves anchor the mass below. A hallway table, a sunroom, the wall above a writing desk: anywhere that needs the heady rush of late May without a single stem of water to change.
