Still Life. Lilacs on the Window

Lilac panicles press toward the light, violet clusters stacked so thick the stems all but vanish. Pyotr Konchalovsky built Still Life. Lilacs on the window around exactly that meeting of blossom and glass. He loads the color in thick dabs, each floret a small knot of mauve, heliotrope and chalked white. Sunlight thins the petals where it strikes, while sill and frame hold a sober ochre and the leaves snap out in hard viridian. A sunroom, breakfast corner or reading nook suits its fresh May temperament, cool daylight and purple bloom kept close at hand through every season.
