Lilac blooms crowd the window opening, dense panicles stacked in violet and white. Still Life. Lilacs in the window bears the devotion of Pyotr Konchalovsky, the Russian painter who returned to this flower every spring. Paint sits thick on the surface, each petal cluster built from short impasto strokes. Cool daylight filters through the glass behind the bouquet, and the purple masses glow against that muted pane. Deep green leaves slash across the blooms while the plain sill grounds the arrangement. Hang it where morning light arrives: a sunroom, a breakfast nook, a bedroom facing east. The brightness in the scene asks for a room with sun to spare.
