Still Life. Lilacs in a Glass Jar against the Stove

Lilacs in a glass jar hold the foreground while a broad stove rises behind, the whole arrangement set down by Pyotr Konchalovsky, who painted flowers the way other men built barns, solid and unapologetic. Impasto does the heavy lifting. Each panicle goes on in loaded strokes, mauve florets over violet shadow, chalk white catching the light along the edges. Behind the flowers, whitewashed masonry takes on the sheen of pale ceramic, its cool expanse pushing every purple forward. A kitchen or dining room with plain plaster walls is its natural setting, somewhere the domestic warmth of the subject still lingers.
