Still Life. Lilacs in a Basket

Lilac trusses crowd a low wicker basket, blossom stacked on blossom until the heap spills past the rim. The Russian painter Pyotr Konchalovsky titled it heroic, and the abundance earns the word. Oil paint sits thick across the surface, each petal a loaded dab of violet, mauve and near white, brushwork left ridged and visible. Deep green leaves anchor the mass, ochre strokes catch the basket weave, and a dark ground pushes the bloom forward. Weight and scent rendered in paint, made for a dining room or a hallway where guests pass close, the purple holding its own against panelled walls or plain plaster.
