Wild daisies, cornflowers and scarlet poppies bunch into a loose meadow armful in Still Life. Field Bouquet. Study for the Tray, Pyotr Konchalovsky working out the pattern for a round painted surface. Brushwork stays broad and loaded, each white petal a single thick stroke, grey shadow pooling where stems cross. Blue heads ring against warm ochre while grass blades and clover jostle along the lower edge, the whole arrangement flattened for a curved surface. A country kitchen or a breakfast nook gives these wildflowers their natural audience, cut that morning with dust still clinging.
