Fruit tumbles among glazed dishes across a laden table in Still Life. Dishes and fruits, Pyotr Konchalovsky at his most generous, painting abundance in solid, heavily loaded masses. A deep blue jug anchors the arrangement, its glaze catching cool light against a dark ground. Apples and pears in crimson, ochre and green heap into earthenware bowls, paint laid on thick and directional, every form given sculptural weight. A folded white cloth beneath supplies the brightest note. Set it in a dining room, above a sideboard or in a generous kitchen, where good food and painted food can keep each other company.
