Still Life. Convolution of ropes and other objects on the couch

Coils of rope sprawl across a rumpled couch in this still life by Pyotr Konchalovsky, a subject of twisted fiber and household clutter given the weight of sculpture. Thick brushwork builds each twisted strand in ochre and raw sienna, frayed ends catching light where the coils tighten. Shadows pool between the loops while a glazed jug, folded cloth and a small wooden box crowd the seat with the solid construction Konchalovsky took from Cezanne. A studio, an entryway with hooks and worn boots, or a study shelved in dark timber gives its rough tactile honesty a natural home.
