Still Life. Checkers and oranges

Round black draughts discs sit tangled with a pile of glowing fruit across the tabletop in Still Life. Checkers and oranges, painted by the Russian artist Pyotr Konchalovsky. He built the scene in thick, sculptural strokes of oil paint, tangerine set hard against near-black shadow. Dimpled peel takes the light in rounded dabs of pigment, lacquered counters gleam like small moons, and one stack leans mid-game above the brown grain of the wood. Made for convivial corners, it belongs over a sideboard in a dining room, above a kitchen nook, or in a study lined with worn books.
