Still Life and a Window

Fruit, a bowl, and a casement open to daylight: the subject of Arthur Segal in Still Life and a Window, where a tabletop still life meets the geometry of a lit window frame. Segal breaks the scene into faceted planes, prismatic color running through the fruit and tabletop like light through glass. Cobalt shadows, warm ochre surfaces, and the pale rectangle of the window play against one another, the modernist grid quietly holding the composition together.
