Steps of the Himalayas

Stone steps rise in a diagonal climb toward peaks of cold blue, the staircase leading the eye upward through thin Himalayan air. This Nicholas Roerich composition turns ascent itself into the subject. Blocky terraces cut across the foreground in muted earth tones, their edges sharpened by crisp linework. Above them the massifs shift into layered violet and cobalt, snow caps reading as pale bands against a deep sky. The color steps cooler with every plane of distance, a mountain palette Roerich pushed further than any of his contemporaries. A stairway motif like this belongs in a hallway or stairwell, where the upward pull of the image meets your own climb.
