Štemarski Garden

Štemarski Garden, painted by Ivan Grohar, opens on a Slovene kitchen garden where cabbages and beans crowd dark tilled ridges. Grohar builds the foliage in heavy moss greens and sap greens, laid with visible impasto, while rough wooden fence posts and a slanting hoe anchor the foreground in earth browns. Light moves across the plot in broken strokes, the same kind of plein air brushwork that carried Impressionism into Central Europe, and the soil itself takes on violet and umber shadows as the day declines. A grounded choice for a farmhouse kitchen or a study lined with books.
