Steamer Leaving Avalon, Catalina Island

A white steamer pulls away from Avalon harbor, its wake cutting a pale seam through the blue of Catalina waters. Granville Redmond follows the vessel as it slips past the breakwater and out toward open sea. Salty light flattens the bay into layered bands of green, turquoise and deep ultramarine, while the hills behind Avalon sit hazy and dry in that particular California glare. Small sailboats dot the anchorage, hulls tilted, sails catching the same offshore breeze that carries the steamer seaward. Brushwork stays loose and wet, the water suggested in quick horizontal strokes rather than detail. Suited to a den, coastal hallway or any room that looks out toward the Pacific.
