State Room at Blenheim Palace

Long galleries of Blenheim Palace open into deep perspective, archways repeating toward a far window in this Winston Churchill interior. Warm lamplight pools on parquet floors. Gilt-framed portraits line the paneled walls at intervals. Chandeliers hang from the painted ceiling, their crystal suggested in loose flecks of cream and gray. Crimson drapery anchors one side of the composition while mirrors double the recession of doorways. The brushwork stays loose and confident, oil laid on in broad, decisive strokes.
