Star Light

A star hangs low over a dark Crimean coastline, and Konstantin Bogaevsky builds the whole canvas around that single point of light. The work reads as pure nocturne, painted by a man who watched the sea cliffs of his homeland until they turned dreamlike. Cold blue dominates the lower half, broken by jagged silhouettes of rock and the faint suggestion of towers along the shore. The star itself glows pale gold against a deep indigo sky, its light doubling in a thin path on the water. Bogaevsky layers his paint thin and dry in places, letting the grain of the ground show through the shadows, then thickens the highlight at the celestial center. A dim hallway or a study with low lamplight suits it best. The painting rewards dark rooms, where the glow carries.
