Stage Design for The Phantom of Hermann Bahr

A shrouded figure drifts across the stage, lit from below while the scenery behind it sinks into violet dusk. Koloman Moser made this stage design for The Phantom of Hermann Bahr. Gouache and watercolor sit over visible graphite lines: flat panels of deep purple, a cold moonlit arch, stepped forms that recall Secession geometry. The ghost reads as a pale vertical shape, edges bleeding into painted haze, drama built from tone alone. It belongs where lamplight does the work: a dim study, a hallway console, a reading nook in dark wood. Vienna theatre lives there.
