A stage design for Mussorgsky opera Khovanshina by Konstantin Yuon, rendered in gouache and charcoal with theatrical breadth. This is the Russian setting at its most dramatic. Scaffolding, timber stairways and log walls rise in ochre and rust, crossed by scaffolding poles drawn in quick graphite. Deep crimson drapery anchors one corner while cold blue sky cuts through the set construction. Streltsy figures stand massed at the base like stage extras, painted small against the vast architecture.
