Stage Design for Mussorgsky Opera Khovanshina

A Muscovite square opens beneath painted arches, streltsy in dark caftans massing before a whitewashed church. Konstantin Yuon set the Mussorgsky opera Khovanshina against that stone, every figure placed for a theatre audience. Gouache sits dense over graphite: oxblood and smoke grey, a flare of orange where torches burn, snow patched across the cobblestones. Perspective leans back the way stage flats do, stretched for the last row, while faces stay quick silhouettes against lit windows. A music room suits it best, hung near shelves of scores and biographies, where the hush before an overture still hangs over Russian stone.
