Old Moscow rises in painted perspective, a stage design by Konstantin Yuon for Mussorgsky opera Khovanshina. Tent roofs and bell towers climb toward a sky washed in dawn light. Deep crimson and burnt sienna dominate, white stone and gilded caps flaring against the glow. Small figures in long kaftans crowd the foreground, dwarfed by architecture built at theatrical scale, every plane flattened for the back of the house. Crosshatched shadows anchor the walls. It suits a study or a hallway lit by low evening lamps, where the reds hold their heat against bare plaster and pale linen curtains.
