Stage Design for Khovanshina

Tall arched windows and torchlit masonry rise behind a crowd of Old Believers in this stage design for Mussorgsky opera Khovanshina. Konstantin Yuon sets the drama before a single painted view. Gouache and charcoal build the architecture in planes of slate blue, ochre and soot. Scaffolding lines, erased figures and scumbled color remain visible, showing how a theater backdrop grows from sketch to spectacle. Rooftops and bell silhouettes press against a pale sky at the top edge, while robed figures mass in the shadowed foreground. Made for a home theater room, music studio or hallway, where its dark tonal drama and theatrical scale hold their own.
