Springtime, San Gabriel Valley

Apple orchards in full blossom fill the foreground of Springtime, San Gabriel Valley, a California landscape by Benjamin Brown. Rows of pale pink and white bloom stretch beneath the San Gabriel Mountains, painted in the open air. Brown lays down quick broken strokes of lavender, rose and cream for the flowering canopy, letting hints of leaf green and brown earth show through. The mountains rise in cool violet behind, their snowlit ridges catching a high spring sun. Thin dark trunks keep the rhythm of the orchard rows and lead the eye toward hazy foothills. A calm, sun-filled subject for a breakfast room, sunroom or reading nook, where the fresh blossom tones sit well against warm wood and linen.
