Springtime Flowers

Anemones and lilacs stand bunched in a clear glass vase: Springtime Flowers, a still life by the Romanian painter Stefan Luchian. The season arrives already cut, stems bent at careless angles in the water. Oil paint sits thick across the surface, petals loaded with white and rose, leaves dragged in sap green. Behind the bouquet a wash of dove grey keeps everything quiet, so each bloom holds its own light. Brushwork stays loose at the edges, water catching the stems halfway down. A sunroom, a breakfast nook, a pale hallway: anywhere that wants the short season of fresh blooms kept permanently in view.
