Springtime at the Sea

Pale light breaks over the water in Springtime at the Sea, a coastal scene by Slovenian painter Matej Sternen. Blossom branches reach across the foreground while the sea holds a soft, milky horizon. The brushwork is loose and broken, laid on in thick strokes of rose, cream and pale blue. Dabs of green suggest young foliage catching salt air, and the water carries thin streaks of lilac where sky meets sea. Warm ochre notes anchor the shoreline in the lower register. A quiet study, sunlit hallway or bedroom corner gives this seascape room to breathe, its pastel palette sitting easily against pale linen, whitewashed wood or soft grey walls.
