A threshold stands wide to the season, and Pyotr Konchalovsky sets the moment down in Spring. Open door on the balcony. Beyond it, lilac and new leaf tangle at the rail. Thick post impressionist impasto builds the blossom trusses stroke by stroke, violet and white laid over pewter grey shadow, each petal mass catching the sun at a different angle. The dark rectangle of the doorway brackets a strip of blue sky, while potted greenery and worn floorboards anchor the foreground. Give it a sunroom or breakfast room, anywhere morning light already gathers, and the painted view doubles as a second window left ajar.
