Spring Night, Harlem River

Night settles over the Harlem River, its surface broken by thick ridges of pigment in teal and cobalt. Ernest Lawson renders the water as almost solid, layered paint catching the last violet light of a spring evening. Tenement silhouettes and bridge spans darken along the banks, while small windows glow amber against the dusk. Lawson builds the scene in heavy impasto, his Ashcan school training visible in the honest weight of every brushstroke. The pale sky above the rooftops warms from apricot near the horizon into deep slate overhead. Hang it in a study or reading nook where low evening light lets those painted reflections carry.
