Spring Morning

Morning light floods a thawing river, ice breaking into pale blue and white slabs along the far bank. Ernest Lawson painted Spring Morning with thick, buttery impasto, the paint itself carrying the chill of early season. Willows hold a wash of sap green and raw yellow, their branches just budding. A low stone bridge crosses midstream, its arches warmed by ochre where the sun has found them. Frost still clings to shaded grass in cool violet shadows, while water reflects the sky in broken strokes of cerulean and cream. This suits a sunroom or a bright breakfast nook, anywhere that greets the day.
