Spring. Martyshkino

Bare birches break into first leaf above a park path, and meltwater pools along the low ground: Spring. Martyshkino, painted by Konstantin Somov at the moment the northern year turns. The palette runs cool and thin. Sky sits in porcelain blue, trunks in grey and lilac shadow, and new foliage carries a citron glow where light passes through. A sandy path runs between the trunks toward open water. Watery translucent washes keep each twig separate against the brightening air. A quiet study or a reading nook near a window suits it well; the scene reads fresh in April and consoling in every colder month.
