Spring Landscape

Bare birch trunks rise through thawing ground, their white bark catching the first pale light of a Russian spring. This is Spring Landscape by Konstantin Somov, a scene where winter loosens its grip almost visibly. Puddles hold slivers of sky. Somov builds the air out of washes of lilac grey and watery blue, letting the horizon dissolve into mist while a scatter of tender green pushes up along the foreground bank. Thin tree silhouettes recede in layers, each fainter than the last, so the eye walks deeper into the picture than its edges suggest. A quiet hallway or a north-facing reading nook suits it well, anywhere the cool morning palette keeps its freshness.
