Spring in Kaunas

Thaw water pools in the street while bare branches spread over the rooftops of Kaunas. Mstislav Dobuzhinsky captures the old Lithuanian city at the exact moment winter lets go, houses huddled along a hill under a pale, quickening sky. The drawing carries his unmistakable hand: nervous, architectural linework, gabled facades tilting toward each other, a church spire pricking the horizon. Soft washes of lilac grey and thawed umber sit over the ink, with hints of green arriving in the distance like a rumor of the season. Every window and chimney is accounted for. A study or hallway gains a genuine sense of place from this early twentieth century cityscape, spring arriving over a provincial Baltic town.
