Spring in Finland

Water runs high through a thawing Finnish landscape in Arkady Rylov's Spring in Finland. Birch trunks rise pale against open sky while meltwater floods the low ground, catching light in long cold streaks across the surface. The palette leans on ice blues and milky whites, with thaw-brown earth breaking through where snow has gone. Rylov builds the scene in loose, wet brushwork: reeds flicked in with quick strokes, distant pines massed in deep green-blue, the flooded meadow laid in broad translucent washes that let the white ground glow through. Air and water seem to move together, the whole surface still cool with late winter. A quiet study, a hallway, or any room that faces north suits its clean, cold light.
