Spring

Apple blossom spills over the upper edge of the picture, white petals thick against a sky washed in palest blue. Guy Rose painted Spring as a figure study, a young woman standing beneath the flowering branch, her pale dress catching the same soft light as the petals above her. Look at the brushwork: short, loaded strokes build the blossom mass, while the background dissolves into loose dabs of rose, lilac and spring green. The figure holds a gathered bunch of flowers at her waist, her face turned gently toward the light, hair bound with a ribbon. Warm flesh tones anchor the center against all that airy color. A soft, feminine corner for a bedroom or a sunlit sitting room, anywhere that wants the freshness of an American impressionist spring morning.
