Spring

Orchard rows in full blossom lean across the canvas, white flowers thick against grass the color of new moss. Gustave Loiseau painted Spring the way he painted all the French countryside, in small dragging strokes of oil that let each tree keep its own character. Beneath the blossom, tilled plots break into pale furrows, and a farm building sits low at the field edge with a red roof catching the light. Loose crosshatched brushwork moves through the sky, grey blue with warmth underneath, while dark trunks zigzag between the rows like stitches. Set it in a breakfast room or a hallway that gets morning sun, where the orchard light reads as weather rather than decoration.
