Spring Frost

A snowbound field glitters under early March light, the ice crusted in ridges where meltwater refroze overnight. Pekka Halonen painted Spring Frost at Lake Tuusula, capturing the precise hour when winter loosens its grip and the first bare saplings cast long blue shadows across the drifts. Look closely and the brushwork does the work of weather: thick white impasto ridges along the drifts, thin washes of grey and lilac where frost thins over dark ground, small touches of rose where low sun strikes the crust. The bare trees at the margin stand dark against the glare, their tracery drawn in a few decisive strokes. It belongs in a study or reading nook, anywhere a quiet northern morning can hold the wall.
