Spring Evening During the Ice Break

Shattered river ice drifts apart in slabs and plates across the surface of Spring Evening During the Ice Break, Hugo Simberg painting of the exact moment winter lets go. The frozen crust splits into pale rafts that crowd the current. Look closely and the color carries the whole drama: bruised violets and charcoal greys press down over the water while slivers of rose light catch the broken edges of the floes. Warmth seeps in from the horizon even as the ice still holds its cold blue bulk. A scene like this belongs in a study or reading room, anywhere an evening mood and northern light can hold the quiet of the hour.
