Spring, Comrie

Blossom presses across the foreground in thick white strokes, a scatter of pink leaning against the green of Perthshire. Spring, Comrie by Samuel Peploe catches the season at its brief height. The village rooftops sit low beneath the trees, small and orderly, almost swallowed by growth. Peploe builds the scene with loaded brushwork. Cream and pale rose sit beside sharp greens, the paint ridged and tactile where blossom clusters gather. Light falls flat and even, Scottish overcast turned to advantage, so every leaf keeps its own note of color. The composition tilts gently, hedgerows and fields receding toward soft hills. It belongs in a bright reading room or a stairwell with good daylight, where the fresh greens can carry across a wall and hold their own against white plaster.
