Spring

Apple blossom crowds the upper branches, each petal loaded with thick white paint. Arthur Streeton painted Spring as a study in renewal, catching an orchard at the exact week when buds break and grass runs riot below. Look closer and the brushwork tells the story. Dabs of viridian and sap green build the swelling meadow, while blue sky flickers through gaps in the canopy. Cream and shell-pink highlights sit wet-on-wet, so blossom seems to hover above the leaf. Shadows run violet, never black, the hallmark of open-air painting done fast, in front of the tree itself. A sunlit kitchen, a garden-facing breakfast nook, any room that opens onto morning light. Hang it where daylight moves, and the blossoms seem to open again each hour.
