Speeding Car (study). Abstract Speed

A car exists here as pure motion, its body smeared into a diagonal streak of violet and crimson that tears across the picture plane before the eye can settle. Speeding Car (study), Abstract Speed reduces an automobile to its velocity. Balla paints the wake, not the machine. Look closely and the single blur resolves into layered strokes: ochre underpainted beneath the violet, force lines raking outward like wind shear, the wheels dissolved entirely into arcs of compressed color. Oil worked wet into wet keeps every edge restless, so the streak seems still accelerating. Nothing is static; even the background is dragged along. Hang it in a stairwell or along a hallway where movement through the space answers the momentum painted on the surface.
